Guided by the intercession of St. Luke the Apostle, Patron Saint of Physicians, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) marked its Centenary Anniversary on 26th February 2026, celebrating one hundred years of dedicated service to humanity in the healing ministry.
In thanksgiving to Almighty God for the countless blessings bestowed over the past century, a solemn Holy Eucharistic Celebration was held at All Saints’ Church, Borella. The Holy Mass was presided over by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, with the participation of members of the GMOA Executive Committee, General Committee, District and Provincial Coordinators, and the wider membership. This sacred gathering provided an opportunity for reflection, gratitude, and spiritual renewal, as doctors united in prayer to honor those who have gone before them and to seek divine guidance for the years ahead.

In his homily, His Eminence commended the GMOA for its century-long commitment to the people of Sri Lanka and reflected deeply on the sacred vocation of medicine. He highlighted the exemplary life of Giuseppe Moscati, who was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1983. Dr. Moscati embodied the true spirit of Christian discipleship in medicine—living a life of profound faith, humility, and total self-giving. He dedicated himself entirely to his patients, serving the sick with compassion and without expectation of material reward. His choice to remain celibate and his unwavering commitment to Christ-centered service stand as a powerful witness to the healing mission as a vocation, not merely a profession.
The celebration served as a reminder that the practice of medicine is, at its heart, a participation in the healing ministry of Christ. As Christ Himself healed the sick and comforted the suffering, so too are doctors called to serve with love, mercy, and integrity.

As the GMOA enters its second century, this centenary thanksgiving stands as both a moment of gratitude and a renewal of purpose. Rooted in faith and inspired by the example of saints and servants of God, the Association reaffirms its commitment to protect the national health service, uphold the dignity of the medical profession, and serve all people with compassion, justice, and unwavering dedication.
“A Century of Healing the Nation” thus becomes not only a reflection of the past, but a sacred calling for the future—one that continues in faith, guided by God’s grace.
